BEFORE THE WORKSHOP

Continuity of the Human Experience. The Renaissance in 19th century architecture in Odessa. The process of formation of Ukrainian nationality started in the epoch of Kyivska Rus. During the period of 14C – first half of the 16C creation of original Ukrainian architecture took place in the difficult and unfavorable historical conditions: feudal division of Western and South-Western territories of Kyivska Rus; weakness after the Tatar-Mongolian yoke; conquering intentions of the neighbor countries – Poland, Hungary, Lithuania, Moldova, Genoa Republic and Turkey. Crush of Byzantium spread the influence of Western European architecture. Odessa was populated with compact colonies of various ethnic and national groups – Greeks, Italians, Germans, Bulgarians and others. National and ethnic peculiarities of settling the city and interaction of cultures formed a unique city culture and a special mentality of its inhabitants. A valuable contribution was made by the following Italian architects who built Odessa: Francisco Frapolli, Giovanni Frapolli, Giovanni Torichelli, Georgiy Dallacva, Franc Boffo, Vaetano Dallacva, Giovanni Scudieri, Luigi Cambiaggia, Francesco Morandi, Giuseppe and Alexander Bernardazzi. The period of birth of South Palmira, when the genetic code of its destiny was created as well as the foundation of its economic and cultural prosperity, concurred with the period of forming a new artistic epoch – the historism. The features of the Renaissance style are varied, they are largely connected with the national peculiarities of architecture, but among them we can single out the main ones, which preserve their importance in architecture of all countries: symmetry of the composition; division of the building by means of horizontal sections of floors; a clear metric order of provision of window openings and architectural details with even spacings in between them; orders were used only in the form of small columns, dividing twin windows; all cymatiums are built with utilization of antique contours; in finishing of the corona (principal cornice) modillions are introduced. Renaissance - is a culture of cultures’ intercourse. The more we penetrate into originality of the Renaissance, the clearer we see that it was expressed in transition. Renaissance is the first in the European and, obviously, world history thinking of heirs. Presence of conscious link with the past is essential for finding out the sources of development of the culture of the modern man and appearance of a new tradition. Our attitude towards the past becomes creative only when an architect is able to understand its inner sense.
